The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has taken a chilling turn after authorities released newly recovered footage from a camera mounted outside her Tucson home.
On Tuesday, the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department shared images and video clips captured by a Google Nest device positioned near Nancy’s front door. The footage shows a masked and armed individual approaching the home in the early hours of February 1 — the morning Nancy was reported missing.
In the clips, the suspect appears to tamper with the camera before ultimately disconnecting and removing it. The individual also attempts to obscure the lens using nearby foliage. For many following the case, the images are disturbing — a stark visual reminder of how suddenly and deliberately Nancy’s quiet life may have been interrupted.
But investigators say what the suspect may have believed would erase evidence could instead become a crucial break in the case.
Private investigator Andy Kay explained that security cameras connected to the internet can temporarily store footage on backend servers, even without a paid subscription. Normally, older images are overwritten quickly. However, if a device is disconnected before new footage replaces the previous data, the last recorded images may remain preserved on the server.
In this case, authorities confirmed that the footage was successfully retrieved from “residual data located in backend systems.” The recovery effort involved collaboration between law enforcement and private sector technology partners.
Kay suggested that the suspect’s attempt to disable the camera may have been a critical error. While he refrained from speculation about idenтιтy, he described the actions as indicative of someone who underestimated modern digital evidence systems.
Shortly after the images were released, Savannah Guthrie shared them publicly, urging anyone who recognizes the individual to come forward. “We believe she is still alive,” she wrote in an emotional plea.
Nancy, 84, was last seen on January 31 after returning home from dinner with family. She was reported missing the following day when she failed to attend church. Authorities have stated they believe she was taken from her home against her will and noted that she requires daily medication that was left behind.
Ransom messages demanding cryptocurrency have circulated, but investigators have confirmed no continued communication after a reported ᴅᴇᴀᴅline pᴀssed. Officials emphasize that the case remains active and ongoing, with no suspects publicly identified.
For Nancy’s family, the newly recovered footage is both terrifying and fragile hope — proof that even in darkness, small traces of truth can survive.
